SM Launches Economic Impact Study of Music Industry

Regina – The Saskatchewan music industry contributes on multiple levels to the economic health of the province, and a newly commissioned study will quantify and qualify this contribution, says SaskMusic Executive Director Noreen Neu.
“The 2007 Music Industry Profile was a major research undertaking that provided rich data regarding the internal workings, practices, and attitudes of music industry participants,” Neu said. “Now it’s critical that we provide data to our industry, to the government and to all stakeholders in the province that underlines that by putting quantifiable numbers to that enterprise activity.”

SaskMusic Changes Fiscal Year End

SaskMusic, in consultation with the Saskatchewan Arts Board, is changing its fiscal year end from ending December 31st to now ending August 31st.  We are doing this to better align our programming and funding cycles with the SAB and our annual programming.  This change means that we will be having a second AGM in 2008 in November, and our new programming year will begin in September 2008.
Watch for 2008/09 programming announcements in the fall.

Record Number of Sask Musicians to NXNE!

SaskMusic congratulates the Saskatchewan artists who are off to Toronto this weekend to perform as part of Canada’s largest music conference and festival.  North by Northeast (NXNE), running June 12-15, features a renowned industry conference, and showcase performances in 40 different downtown venues.  Industry events such as NXNE are vital in the advancement of musicians' and industry professionals' careers.
Previous years have seen two or three artists from Saskatchewan selected to perform at the prestigious festival attached to the event; this year, we have nine.  No doubt, a booming year for musical talent from our province.
We wish good luck and good networking to all our members showcasing and attending the event this weekend!

Letter to Minister Christine Tell

April 21, 2008
Dear Minister Tell:
I am writing to you on behalf of all those employed in Saskatchewan’s music industry to express our concern regarding the recently announced provincial budget, and the redirection of SaskMusic’s new funding that was to have been administered through the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

While we are not yet certain how your ministry plans to reallocate these funds, we do hope you recognize the impact that any loss of support to SaskMusic would have on our province’s music industry and those who work in it.
