Local important events and happenings. Saskatoon Country & Western Music Association Friday Night Jam. Come out to the best country music jam in town. Great live country bands play every friday night and they provide super backup music for the jammers that show up, plus there is a big dance floor that gets pretty full each weekend. Be sure to come down early to get your name listed on the jammers white board. (you write it there yourself) Bring your instrument or a friend and come and listen to some good music and have some fun!! Everyone is welcome. Remember, get here early to make sure you get a chance on the big stage. Start Time is 8:30. If you would like to become a member of the SCWMA, we can sign you up at the jam. Help keep The Music Live!!! 2008 ABORIGINAL PEOPLES CHOICE MUSIC AWARDS - SASKATCHEWAN NOMINEES DONNY PARENTEAU: “WHAT IT TAKES” BEST ALBUM COVER DESIGN BEST COUNTRY CD In the past year, Donny has garnered over two dozen award nominations - receiving seven Saskatchewan Country Music Awards, and nominated for JUNO, Canadian Country Music, Western Canadian Music, and Canadian Aboriginal Music awards, while maintaining a full time performance schedule. JASON CHAMAKESE: “MIDNIGHT AT CLEARWATER, NATIVE AMERICA FLUTE SONGS, VOL. 1” BEST FLUTE CD Jason is Plains Cree from the Pelican Lake First Nation, a fluent Cree speaker and role model. His strong cultural background and respect for traditional stories and songs played a key role in his discovery of the Native American Flute over a decade ago; this is his first CD. His music has been described as haunting, tranquil, and timeless. WANITA BIRD-CHARLES: “FOR OUR CHILDREN” BEST GOSPEL CD Wanita is from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nations and is Cree, Saulteaux. BIG RIVER CREE: “GOING HOME” BEST HAND DRUM CD Big River Cree are from Big River First Nation in Northern Saskatchewan. The group consists of extended family members of the "Whitefish" family. They are well known throughout Canada and the United States for their unique style of singing. Through their grandparents’ teachings and guidance in the use of the hand drum, they demonstrate proper protocol as they were taught. CREE SOCIETY: “DON’T GET MAD” BEST HAND DRUM CD The Cree Society Singers are a round dance crew originating from the Kahkewistahaw First Nation. RED BULL: “FOREVER & EVER” BEST HAND DRUM CD This world-famous drum group from the Little Pine Cree Nation near North Battleford took home a NAMMY in 2002. Their music is considered "northern original style", a form characterized by high-pitched vocals associated with Cree singers. BLU: “REZ LIFE” BEST NEW ARTIST BEST RAP OR HIP HOP CD This rising star was born in Prince Albert, and grew up on the Big River First Nation (also known as Whitefish Reserve). Hip Hop was introduced to BLU by friends who supported him on a healing journey, recovering from addictions. On this debut CD, BLU defines his life on the rez: family; friends; addiction; recovery...with hopes to inspire and have an impact on others facing difficult situations. BLACK RAIN: “HUNDRED DOLLAR HICKEY” BEST ROCK CD Black Rain, from the of Ahtahkakoop First Nation, consists of Ryan Peekeekoot, Jamie Peekeekoot and Lenny Peekeekoot. Born into musical families, after many years of writing their own original music, Black Rain is now nominated for this their second CD, and is signed to Drumgroups.com. They perform regularly on the Saskatchewan club circuit. 2008 NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS - SASKATCHEWAN NOMINEES Saskatoon-based label Turtle Island Records has been honoured this year with five nominations (as indicated below). NORTHERN CREE & FRIENDS: “CALLING ALL DANCERS” BEST COMPILATION RECORDING RECORD OF THE YEAR One of North America’s premiere pow-wow groups, Northern Cree has recorded more than twenty albums for Canyon Records (U.S.). They have been nominated for JUNO, Grammy, NAMMY and Canadian Aboriginal Music awards, and appeared in the film “Grey Owl”. Group members hail from Saskatchewan and Alberta. VARIOUS (TURTLE ISLAND): “OLD STYLE ROUND DANCE SONGS” BEST COMPILATION RECORDING As Saskatchewan is the birth place of round dance, this is a fitting nomination for a compilation featuring the music of Pipestone Creek, Sweetgrass, Big Island Cree, Red Bull, Little Island Cree, Art Moosomin and Copper Creek. (The majority of the groups on this project are from Saskatchewan.) EDMUND BULL (TURTLE ISLAND): “FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS” BEST COUNTRY RECORDING BEST MALE ARTIST Edmund has developed his talents and skills in the art of traditional and contemporary music, combining the two forms to create a very unique style and sound. He sings and composes music with thoughts and feelings to express the way of life of the people of Turtle Island. Also a vocalist with the Red Bull Singers, Edmund has performed throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe. KELLY PARKER FOR EDMUND BULL: “FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS” (TURTLE ISLAND) BEST PRODUCER Kelly heads Saskatoon-based Turtle Island Records, a label representing some of the most respected Native American artists and groups in North America. Parker and Turtle Island have been nominated for JUNO, NAMMY, Canadian Aboriginal Music, Prairie Music and Western Canadian Music awards. BLU: “REZ LIFE” DEBUT ARTIST OF THE YEAR BEST RAP HIP HOP RECORDING (see bio above) VIOLET NAYTOWHOW: “WIND OF THE NORTH” BEST FOLK RECORDING Violet is a Woodland Cree singer/songwriter based in Prince Albert. She has been writing songs, playing guitar, hand drum, rattle and singing since she was a young child. She has recorded and performed with a wide variety of musicians (from Pepe Mendoza to Chester Knight) and is a musical role model in many Northern Saskatchewan Aboriginal communities. MEEWASIN OMA: “MORNING PRAISE UNTO OUR CREATOR” (TURTLE ISLAND) BEST NATIVE AMERICAN CHURCH RECORDING Meewasin Oma is an a cappella group that sings inter-tribal prayer songs from the Native American Church.
